Overwatering vs underwatering: how to tell the difference

Your plant droops, the leaves yellow, and you have to decide whether it wants more water or less. Answer that backwards and you will kill it, because the two conditions need opposite responses.

They look alike, which is the problem. A badly overwatered plant droops, yellows and wilts, and so does a thirsty one. Once you know why, you can separate them in about two minutes.

Both problems produce the same symptoms

Roots take up water, and they also need oxygen from the air pockets between soil particles. Saturated soil fills those pockets, the roots suffocate, root tissue breaks down, and rot organisms that were sitting harmlessly in the soil move into the dying tissue.

A rotted root cannot absorb water. So an overwatered plant sits in wet soil unable to drink from it, and the leaves send the same signal a thirsty plant sends. The plant drowns and dehydrates at the same time.

That is why "it looked thirsty so I watered it more" turns a recoverable plant into a dead one. You read the symptom correctly and inverted the cause.

Check the soil before you read the leaves

Start with the growing medium. This one habit resolves most cases on the spot.

The finger test. Push a finger 3 to 5 cm into the soil, past the top centimetre that dries out constantly and tells you nothing. Dry at depth points to underwatering. Wet and cool at depth, on a drooping plant, points to overwatering.

The weight test. Lift the pot right after a thorough watering and remember what it weighs. Lift it again a week later. After two or three cycles you can judge a plant's water status by picking it up, faster than any gadget and more reliably.

Moisture meters. The cheap probe meters sold for houseplants measure electrical conductivity rather than moisture, so fertiliser salts and dense soil skew the reading. Use one to track change in a single pot over time. Do not trust it in a pot you have fertilised this month.

Symptom by symptom

Once you know whether the soil is wet or dry, these details confirm it.

How the leaves feel

The most useful single tell. Underwatered leaves go crispy, thin and papery at the edges and tips. Overwatered leaves go soft and limp, sometimes slightly see-through. Roll a leaf between your fingers. Dry and brittle means thirst. Soft and floppy on wet soil means the roots are in trouble.

Which leaves go first

Overwatering starts at the bottom of the plant and climbs, because a damaged root system cannot support the whole canopy and the oldest leaves get abandoned first. Underwatering shows at the edges and tips across the plant more evenly, and new leaves come in small rather than yellow.

The pattern of yellowing

Overwatered yellowing runs even and soft: a whole leaf pales, goes limp, and often drops while still yellow. Underwatered yellowing arrives after the margins have browned and crisped.

Leaf drop

A thirsty plant holds its leaves and lets them crisp. A plant with root rot drops leaves that still look green. Green leaves falling off a plant in wet soil is the clearest warning you will get, and it deserves attention that day.

The soil surface

Look for a white crust on the soil or around the pot rim, which is mineral and fertiliser salt buildup from watering little and often instead of flushing properly. Green fuzz or a slick, dark surface points the other way, to soil that never dries.

Smell

Healthy soil smells like a forest floor. Root rot smells sour and swampy. Put your nose near the drainage hole. If you get that smell, act today.

Fungus gnats

Small dark flies drifting around your pots breed in the top few centimetres of permanently moist soil. They work as a moisture gauge: a gnat population means the surface never dries out.

Drooping that watering does not fix

The decisive test. An underwatered plant droops, and two to twelve hours after a thorough soak it perks back up. An overwatered plant droops and stays that way, or gets worse, because more water is the opposite of what its roots need. If you watered yesterday and the plant looks sadder today, stop watering and check the roots.

The definitive test: look at the roots

When the surface evidence stays ambiguous, slide the plant out of its pot. Support the base of the stem, tip the pot, and ease the root ball out. You are reading two things: colour and texture.

Healthy roots feel firm, look white or light tan, and resist a tug. Rotten roots are brown or black and slimy, and the outer layer slides off between your fingers leaving a thin thread behind. You will recognise that sliding sheath once you have felt it.

Dehydrated roots look dry and brittle, and the whole root ball often shrinks away from the pot walls. If you can see daylight down the side of the root ball, water has been running down that channel and out of the drainage hole without wetting the soil at all.

How to rescue an overwatered plant

  1. Stop watering and move the plant somewhere brighter and better ventilated, keeping it out of harsh direct sun while it recovers.
  2. Take it out of the pot and inspect the roots. If the damage is mild and limited to the outer roots, let the root ball dry down and change your routine.
  3. Cut the rot away with clean scissors, back to firm, pale tissue. Rotted roots left in place keep the problem going underground.
  4. Repot into fresh, airy mix in a pot with a drainage hole, the same size or one size smaller. A reduced root system in a bigger pot sits in water it cannot use.
  5. Cut the canopy back in proportion if you removed a lot of root, so the remaining roots are not asked to supply leaves they cannot reach.
  6. Water once, lightly, then leave it alone until the top few centimetres dry out.

Skip the fertiliser while a plant recovers. Damaged roots cannot use the nutrients and the added salts make things worse. Wait for new growth before you feed.

How to rescue an underwatered plant

Usually the easier fix, with one complication. Soil that has dried out completely, peat-based mix above all, turns hydrophobic and repels water. Pour water on top and it runs down the gap between the root ball and the pot, out the bottom, and you end up with a wet saucer and a dry plant.

Water from below instead. Stand the pot in a basin of water for twenty to forty minutes and let the soil draw water up through the drainage hole. The surface darkens when the root ball has rehydrated. Let it drain before you put it back.

You will lose the leaves that already went crispy, since brown tissue does not turn green again. Watch for healthy new growth, which is the real sign of recovery.

Preventing both

Chronic watering trouble traces back to a handful of causes, and fixing those beats managing symptoms forever.

When it is neither

Sometimes soil moisture checks out and the plant still looks unhappy. Watering causes most of these symptoms, though not all of them. Rule out:
