Frost arrives on a specific night, which makes it one of the few plant problems you can prevent outright. Know which of your plants are vulnerable, spend twenty minutes the evening before, and you can protect nearly all of them with things you already own.
This guide works in either hemisphere. Your first frost may fall in October or in May, so watch the pattern rather than the month: the point in your year when night temperatures start dropping toward zero.
What frost does
Below freezing, water inside and between plant cells forms ice crystals that rupture cell walls. The damage shows once the tissue thaws: leaves go dark, limp and water-soaked, then dry to brown or black. That is why frost damage looks worse the morning after a cold night than during it.
Two distinctions change how you respond.
Light frost versus hard freeze. A light frost, roughly 0 to minus 2 degrees Celsius for a short spell, damages tender foliage and leaves woody stems and roots intact. A hard freeze, below about minus 4 for several hours, reaches deeper and kills tissue a light frost would spare. Most protective measures buy two to four degrees, the margin that turns a damaging night into a harmless one. None of them saves a tender plant from a serious freeze.
Radiation frost versus advective freeze. Radiation frost forms on still, clear nights, when ground heat radiates into an open sky and cold air settles. Covers work well against it, because you trap heat on its way up. An advective freeze is a mass of cold air arriving on the wind, often under cloud, and covers help far less when the cold blows through everything.
So a clear, still, cold evening is the classic frost setup, and that is the night to act on.
Know your real risk
Forecasts report air temperature measured around 1.5 metres up in a ventilated screen. On a still night the air at ground level, and the surface of your plants, runs 2 to 5 degrees colder than that number. A forecast of plus 3 with clear skies and no wind puts you at frost risk at plant level, which catches people out every year.
Your garden has microclimates, and learning them beats any single technique:
- Frost pockets. Cold air is dense and flows downhill like water, pooling at the bottom of slopes and against walls and solid fences. The low corner of a garden can run several degrees colder than the top.
- Walls and paving. Masonry absorbs heat during the day and releases it at night, so a bed against a sunny wall stays warmer than one in the open.
- Overhead cover. A tree canopy, a pergola or a balcony above cuts radiation loss to the sky and can prevent light frost outright.
- Open ground. The middle of a lawn under clear sky is the coldest spot in most gardens.
Which plants need protecting
Covering hardy plants wastes effort you could spend on the ones at risk.
At serious risk: tender annuals such as basil, tomatoes, peppers, courgettes and most bedding flowers, which the first frost kills outright. Tropical and subtropical plants summering outdoors, including citrus, hibiscus, bougainvillea and any houseplant on holiday. Succulents from warm climates. Anything planted this season, since roots that have not established leave a plant far more vulnerable than an established specimen of the same species.
Moderately at risk: marginally hardy shrubs growing near the cold edge of their range. Early flower buds on fruit trees and camellias, where the plant survives and you lose the crop. Anything in a container, for reasons below.
Fine without help: established hardy perennials, which die back and resprout. Hardy trees and shrubs suited to your climate. Kale, leeks, parsnips and sprouts improve after light frost, as starches convert to sugars.
Container plants are a special case
People underestimate this risk more than any other on the list. A plant in the ground has a huge thermal mass of soil around its roots, which holds heat and rarely freezes through. A plant in a pot has a small volume of soil exposed to cold air on all sides, and it can freeze solid.
Treat a container plant as roughly one hardiness zone less hardy than the same plant in the ground. A shrub rated to survive your winters can still lose its roots in a pot on an exposed terrace.
- Move pots against a house wall, into a corner, under an overhang, or into an unheated garage for the worst nights.
- Group them. Clustered pots shelter each other and share thermal mass, and the ones in the middle come off best.
- Insulate the container as well as the foliage. Wrap pots in hessian, bubble wrap, old blankets or straw. You are protecting the roots.
- Raise pots off cold paving onto pot feet or a piece of wood, which cuts heat conduction downward and keeps the root ball out of water that can freeze.
Preparation before the cold season
Stop feeding late in the season. Fertiliser high in nitrogen pushes out soft new growth, and frost destroys soft growth first. Let plants harden off as the season winds down.
Mulch. A 5 to 10 cm layer of bark, leaf mould, straw or compost over the root zone insulates the soil and protects roots and crowns. Keep it clear of stems and trunks to avoid rot.
Soak the ground before a cold night. It sounds wrong and it works. Moist soil holds far more heat than dry soil and releases it overnight, keeping the root zone warmer. Water in the morning or early afternoon so the soil absorbs heat during the day. Do not water frozen ground, and do not leave containers standing in water.
Delay pruning. Pruning stimulates new growth and leaves open wounds, so save structural work for the end of the cold season.
What to do on the night
Covers trap heat radiating from the ground, so the details matter more than the material.
- Cover before dusk, while the ground still holds the day's warmth. Cover at ten at night and you trap air that has already gone cold.
- Take the cover down to the ground and weigh the edges with stones, bricks or soil. The heat comes from the earth, so a cover draped over the plant with open sides lets it escape.
- Keep the material off the foliage. Cold transfers straight through wherever a cover touches a leaf, and you get frost damage in that exact pattern. Hold it clear with stakes, hoops, tomato cages or an upturned crate.
- Choose fabric over plastic. Horticultural fleece, old sheets, blankets, hessian and towels breathe and insulate. Plastic sheeting conducts cold and traps condensation, and resting on foliage it makes damage worse. If plastic is all you have, build a frame so nothing touches and take it off in the morning.
- Uncover in the morning once temperatures rise above freezing, so plants get light and air and heat does not build up underneath on a sunny day. Fleece left on through a bright day cooks plants and forces soft growth.
Adding heat. For a few precious plants on a marginal night, thermal mass helps: several jugs or dark bottles of water under the cover absorb heat by day and release it overnight. A string of old-style incandescent Christmas lights under a cover raises the temperature by a couple of degrees. Modern LED strings give off no useful heat.
Cloches and tunnels. For low-growing plants and seedlings, an upturned bucket, a cut plastic bottle or a purpose-made cloche does the job. Take them off in the morning.
Bringing tender plants indoors
For plants that will not survive your cold season outdoors, plan the move before the first frost rather than during a panic.
- Move them in while nights are still mild, once temperatures start dropping below about 10 to 12 degrees for tropicals. Waiting for the frost warning means moving plants that are already stressed.
- Inspect and treat for pests first. Everything that has been outdoors comes in with passengers. Check leaf undersides and joints, rinse the foliage, and consider a preventive treatment. An untreated plant shares whatever it carries with your whole indoor collection within weeks.
- Acclimatise where you can, moving plants into shade for a week beforehand to soften the drop in light.
- Expect leaf drop. A plant moving from outdoor to indoor light sheds foliage it can no longer support. Cut back the watering to match the slower growth, and hold the fertiliser until growth resumes.
After a frost
If the cold caught you out, do less than you want to.
Leave the pruning. Damaged foliage insulates the tissue underneath from the next cold night, so leave it until the risk of further frost passes.
Wait before writing anything off. Plants resprout from roots or lower stems weeks after the top growth died. Scratch a patch of bark with a fingernail, and green underneath means living tissue. Give a plant a full season before you remove it.
Hold the fertiliser. A frost-damaged plant cannot use the nutrients while it repairs tissue, and forcing soft growth ahead of more cold makes things worse.
Water carefully. Damaged roots take up less water, so the soil stays wet longer. Check before you water.

A short seasonal checklist
- Well before the cold: find your frost pockets and warm walls, stop feeding, and plan where tender plants will overwinter.
- As nights cool: mulch root zones, move and group containers, insulate pots, and bring tropicals in before they are shocked.
- The day of a frost warning: soak the ground in the morning, then cover before dusk with the edges pinned to the ground.
- The morning after: uncover, leave the pruning, and wait before judging the damage.
